Kaiser Permanente awards over $1 million to Sac area orgs

Kaiser Permanente awards over $1 million to Sac area orgs

Kaiser Permanente in the Sacramento region is donating just over one million dollars to non-profit organizations that serve the community by improving access to health services, promoting healthy eating and more opportunities for fitness, and preventing youth, family and gang violence.

The Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit grants, which range from $5,000 to $98,000, come at a time when other funding sources are limited and private donations are down. Even county health departments and school districts are among the grant recipients.

Kaiser Permanente has three objectives in its grants: the first is to improve access to health care coverage, health services and health education; the second is to support Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) initiatives; the third is to help prevent community and family violence.

“Denio’s has always been family oriented,” said Ken Denio, owner of Denio’s Farmers Market and Swap Meet. “It was started in 1947 by my father and we hope that this will become a new tradition for fathers and their kids in years to come.”

“Dad’s Day” will take place on the Denio’s Roseville Farmers Market and Swap Meet grounds in the area known to many as the “flats.” More than 50 classic cars, including the Denio’s own 1947 fire truck will be on display. "Big Truck Day" event May 23

"Big Truck Day" event May 23

ELK GROVE, CA – It’s not every day that a child can say they have honked the horn of a bus or heard the wail of a fire engine from the front seat. However, they can do both at the City of Elk Grove’s first “Big Truck Day.”

The free event will be held on Wednesday, May 23 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the back parking lot of City Hall, located at 8401 Laguna Palms Way.

More than a dozen trucks, large vehicles, buses and construction equipment will be on site, with representatives stationed at each vehicle to educate visitors about the vehicle and the profession.

“Big Truck Day” will be held in celebration of National Public Works Week. The larger goal of the event is to help educate the public on the importance of the contribution of public works to their daily lives.

Sharon Ito's blog: Something pretty special in my photo

Sharon Ito's blog: Something pretty special in my photo

Sharon Ito's blog: How fun was it to have my in-laws and my folks drop by my house this afternoon, unexpectedly in both cases, and have their visits overlap.

I couldn't wait to show the photo to our daughter --  how many kids can say both sets of grandparents live close by.  And as my husband and I say with gratitude, our folks (in their 80s or approaching 80) are still with us and they continue to live independent and meaningful lives.

My folks are celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary this weekend; my in-laws are approaching 59 years together in August.  Now that's pretty special, too.
